7-point tour to Darjeeling, incorporating the idea of Safarnama-a concept of a travel diary that beautifully amalgamates reflection with practical travel tips. Safarnama: A 7-Point Journey Through Darjeeling's Enchantment
As a traveller, I often seek destinations that offer not only sights but experiences that may linger in the heart and mind long after the journey ends. Darjeeling has misty mornings, enchanting landscapes, and a rich cultural tapestry to boast of. Here is a Safarnama Holidays of my recent 7-point tour through the Queen of the Hills, Darjeeling, thereby trying to grasp the essence of each stop along the way.
My journey began at Tiger Hill, which turned out to be nothing short of spiritual. I had arrived well before the break of dawn to join a crowd of eager travellers bundled up in the chill pre-sunrise air, waiting for nature's grand show.
Peaks of Kanchenjunga and far-away Everest emerged from their sleep at the first rays of the sun through the misty morning and were bathed in golden light. The view was just stunning-moment after a moment of nature's grandeur unfolded.
Come dressed warmly and early to find a spot for viewing. Don't forget your camera to shoot those magical, fleeting sunrise moments.
Getting onto the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or the Toy Train itself was like entering a time machine. The soft chug of the steam engine, the rhythmic clickety-clack of the tracks, reminded one of simpler times.
The train curved its way through verdant tea gardens and idyllic villages, revealing local life and glimpses of views. Every turn of the track was bringing forth a new facet of the landscape.
Early booking with IRCTC is recommended, especially if you want a ride amidst scenic views from Darjeeling to Ghum. One of the best times for a perfect light shot is early morning.
Batasia Loop came as a surprise. At this place, genius in the form of engineering meets tranquillity in nature. Standing on the viewpoint, I admired the ingenious spiral track and serene surroundings.
This loop provides a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills and the grand war memorial that was a tribute to the Gurkha soldiers. The vibrancy of colours of the garden along with the serenity of the atmosphere created an apt place for reflection.
Spend some time in the garden and visit the war memorial to understand the historic value of the place. It's best to go early in the morning or late afternoon for the best light for photography.
It was an experience to savour each moment spent at Happy Valley Tea Estate. The rolling green expanse of the tea plantations stretched as far as the eye could see, with an overlay of the subtle aroma of fresh tea leaves carried along the air.
The guided tour very ably presented the teething process from leaf plucking to brewing the ultimate cup. Refreshing, tasting the tea on the estate with a view.
Use comfortable walking shoes to view the estates. Purchase some teas to take home as a special reminder of your trip.
It was almost a haven for adventurers and dreamers-the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. This was quite promising, to watch the displays on the history of mountaineering and on the essence of exploration defining this region.
Fascinating artefacts and photographs of legendary expeditions, including the first ascent of Everest, were contained within the museum. The institute is committed to mountaineering education in every respect.
Budget 1-2 hours for a leisurely visit. If you're a mountaineering enthusiast, check for any workshops or events that might coincide with your visit.
This Japanese Peace Pagoda was a peaceful getaway from the activity bustle going on in Darjeeling. Serene feelings were felt deep inside while walking in these serene grounds.
The beautiful murals on the pagoda and the gardens around made a nice setting for contemplation. The panoramic view of Darjeeling from the pagoda was the perfect way to end the visit.
Keep the serenity of the surroundings by keeping quiet. Go either early morning or late afternoon to avoid much noise.
A walk up and down Chowrasta and Mall Road was like being immersed in the pulsating heart of Darjeeling. Lively atmosphere, combined with charming shops and eateries, made it a delightful experience.
The place was busy with local vendors, street performers, and tourists in the centralised hub area. People-watching with momos and thukpa was definitely one of my favourite activities.
Come down in the evening, as this is when the environment is going to be more vibrant. Take your time through the local shops for some unique souvenirs and street food to have the local taste of Darjeeling.
